Joseph Maxwell Cleland (born August 24, 1942) is an American politician from the state of Georgia. Cleland, a Democrat, is a disabled US Army veteran of the Vietnam War, a recipient of the Silver Star and the Bronze Star for valorous actions in combat, and a former United States Senator. He also served as Administrator of Veterans Affairs (now a Cabinet-level position). From 2003 to 2007, he served on the Board of Directors of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, a presidentially-appointed position. From 2009 to 2017, he served as Secretary of the American Battle Monuments Commission. After his defeat in 2002, no Georgia Democrats were elected to a full term in the United States Senate for 18 years until Jon Ossoff, who won Cleland's former seat in a 2021 runoff against incumbent Republican David Perdue.
