Eleni Kounalakis (née Tsakopoulos; born March 3, 1966) is an American politician, businesswoman, and former diplomat who, since 2019, has served as the 50th lieutenant governor of California. A member of the Democratic Party, she is the first woman elected to the office.From 2010 to 2013, Kounalakis was the United States Ambassador to Hungary. In 2019, Kounalakis became Lieutenant Governor of California, after winning the 2018 election. On April 24, 2023, Kounalakis announced her candidacy for Governor of California in the 2026 California gubernatorial election.
